Checking Surgeons’ Credentials: 25% Skip It

Researching Cosmetic Surgeons

A new campaign in England and in Australia could easily be imported to the United States.

Based on plastic surgery patient surveys before and after surgery, British researchers found that one-quarter of patients opting for a plastic surgery procedure had no idea if that surgeon was properly trained with the right credentials and certifications for performing cosmetic plastic surgery.

One-fifth did not know cosmetic surgery had risks.

Result?

Our cousins down under in the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons noticed the same syndrome and launched a public awareness campaign, “Think Over Before Make Over.”

A part of the solution is a suggested mandatory 14-day waiting period after the first consultation.

The Australian society already asks its surgeons for a voluntary 10 day cooling off period to think over a make over.

The problem is somewhat worse in Australia because thousands jet off to Thailand for cut-rate procedures. Most learn the surgeons’ names when they first met them.

But a similar campaign could take root in America: one of the leading professional organizations for facial cosmetic surgeons studied its annual statistics and found that as many as 15 to 25 percent of first nose jobs were botched and required another procedure known as revision surgery. In other words, a nose job re-do was needed.

Could those U.S. botched nose jobs be due to patients who did not check on their surgeons’ credentials?

First order of business is reading more about the procedure you want; cosmetic plastic surgery is like any other surgery with risks and complications.

Checking surgeon credentials is as easy as reading new car reviews. Plastic surgeons’ websites make it a snap.

When you see the website of a cosmetic plastic surgeon, first go to the “about the surgeon.” Look for his level of board certification.

Then check the surgeon’s number of before and after pictures; there should be many.
